Creative Collaboration

Gear & Equipment
As a life-long bass nerd, erstwhile music-shop-employee and full-time studio gremlin, I have, over the years, put together a delightful set of tools. I pride myself on being able to find the right tone for the job and always using the gear to serve the song. BASSES: MacIntyre 6-string jazz bass. Handmade in Leith, Scotland by the genius that is Chris McIntyre. A masterpiece in ash, maple, abalone and metal! With an John East Preamp & custom Sadowsky pickups, this gives more tone than anyone could wish for! Fender Precision Bass This is my main "studio" bass and is customised from a "Nate Mendel" signature. Strung with flats, for a classic, vintage tone. Seymour pickup, badass bridge and nitro finish. Fender USA Urge II This is the Stu Hamm signature, which has been fitted out with a custom East preamp, as well a an aluminium nut and other hardware appointments. It's a bit of a swiss army knife, covering both P and J tones convincingly, albeit with a little of its own character due to pickup placement. Strung with rounds and perfect for more modern sounds. Fretless Ibanez Roadstar P-bass This one is from the early 80s and has a beautiful clear fundamental. (A fretless P is an underrated thing!) Again, strung with flats and very useful in the studio! Fretless Ibanez 6-string For when I need a wildcard or want a physical challenge! AMPS & TONES: In the studio, I have a very versatile set up encompassing approaches from DI to preamp (Darkglass Vintage Deluxe/ ISA One), to amp (including BI amp using frequency cut-off) and microphone, to modelling (using Line 6 Helix hardware and software). I am lucky to have access to a great selection of amps, cabs, mics and effects through being based in Music Base and working from Lost Oscillation.
