BASS LESSONS

with Jack

Approach & philosophy

When teaching, my goal is to empower each student to connect with their instrument and their own creativity. Together, we’ll build your skills, confidence, and enjoyment of music, with a focus on making the learning journey as rewarding as the destination. You can read more about my approach & methodology in this article.

My philosophy can be summarised as: The best teaching is invisible. It guides without dictating and inspires without overwhelming.

Core values

My approach is built on the following core principles to ensure every student has a fulfilling, personalised, and effective experience:

Individual approach

Every student is unique. Their learning should be too.

I create bespoke learning plans for each student, based on understanding their goals, learning style, and circumstances. Lessons are guided by students' preferences and are about your unique journey as a musician.

Creative expression

Lessons are a safe and encouraging space to experiment and discover your unique voice.

We’ll foster creativity and confidence alongside technical growth at every stage, from crafting bass lines, to improvising, to questions of reportoire and interpretation.

Enjoyment of music

Music is one of life’s great joys, and lessons should reflect that.

My goal is that lessons are a highlight of your week. Whether it’s jamming along to your favourite song or mastering a theory concept, we will create an environment where learning is fun and progress feels rewarding.

Focus on fundamentals

As you progress, I will help you maintain appropriate focus on the fundamentals.

Key areas like  mechanical efficiency, posture and playing comfort, maintenance of a realistic and effective practise schedule, and listening actively will be looked after.

Holistic musicianship

Studying with me is about more than just bass technique—it's about becoming a well-rounded musician.

We’ll explore broader aspects like performance mindset, ensemble playing, and strategies for lifelong learning and skill acquisition. After all, "we're musicians, not just bassists!"

Support beyond lessons

I always provide detailed notes and take-home materials to ensure progress continues outside of lesson time.

My commitment to students extends beyond the lesson itself, giving you the tools to stay motivated and on track.
